American bedding guide | bedding English, usage, shopping guide, money saving tips

Have the little friends who have just come to the United States feel that the bedding set in the American mall, pick the one with the most sets and go home, only to find that a lot of fabrics don’t know where to put it? And there is not even the most basic duvet cover in the suit? I really want to complain about the high prices and poor quality of Meidi bedding. It looks good and feels rough?

In fact, all of this is just because you didn’t buy it right. Now a certain Rain is here to discuss with you how to choose bedding that suits you. To

English name + purpose of bedding
First of all, we must first figure out what the names of various bedding products in English correspond to:

The traditional American bed is composed of Bed Frame (bed frame), Boxspring/Foundation (mattress base) and Mattress (matress).

So there is the product Bedskirt (bed skirt), which is used to cover the base of the mattress and cover the unsightly base and foot of the bed.

There is another type called Platform Bed, which is more modern in design and does not require a base. The body of the bed is also beautiful. If you use this kind of bed at home, the bed skirt is meaningless.

There are two types of American Bed Sheets: Fitted Sheet and Flat Sheet.

The Fitted sheet has elastic bands, which can fit snugly on the mattress without shifting.
To
The Flat Sheet is more like a traditional Chinese bed sheet, just a rectangular cloth that can cover the entire mattress. The American flat sheet is used between the bed sheet and the quilt, and people sleep between the two sheets, so that you can wash the sheets without washing the quilt (similar to hotel usage).

Tips:

It is recommended to put a layer of Mattress Protector under the bed sheet, which can prevent dust mites and even waterproof, and protect the mattress.

When laying the flat sheet, it should be face down, and then folded back, so that the fancy of the sheet can be displayed.
When choosing a bed sheet, in addition to looking at the size (Twin/Full/…), you must also see how thick the Fitted Sheet fits into the mattress.
Quilt and duvet cover
It’s the quilt’s turn on the bedsheets. What the Chinese collectively call quilts has a lot of detailed classifications in the United States.

Let’s first talk about Bedspread, which refers to a thin decorative quilt, usually with a fancy style. You can add a corresponding fancy pillowcase. Its characteristic is that the length can cover the entire bed all the way to the ground (bedspread can also omit the bedskirt Up).

However, as the current mattresses are getting thicker and thicker, the size of bedspread is no longer universal, and it has gradually become less popular. Instead, Coverlets that cover only half the length and are convenient to use with other thick quilts are more common.

Quilt refers to a thin quilted quilt (traditional style is a pattern in which at least one side is patched up by many pieces of cloth), which is generally thicker than coverlet, but thinner than comforter/duvet. PS, the quilted style is called Quilted, which can be quilted coverlet, quilted sham and so on.

The English name of the quilt and the quilt is Comforter / Duvet Insert, which is actually a thicker and warmer quilt (but the inner layer can be cotton, polyester fiber, down, etc.), especially the English name of the pure cotton quilt is 100% Cotton Filled Comforter, the duvet is Down Comforter.

Duvet insert and comforter are often interchangeable. In addition to the quilt, Comforter also refers to the thick quilt in the Bedding Sets. The surface is already printed and can be used directly without the quilt cover. Usually the whole quilt is washed together. Wash; and duvet insert generally refers to a solid-color quilt, and is usually used with a duvet cover of the corresponding size.

The English duvet cover is Duvet Cover. If you want to buy a duvet cover, you can probably only find the Duvet Cover Set. American duvet covers are sold together with pillowcases of the same color, such as the Duver Cover category in the Target store.

There are also single-layer Blankets and Throw (small blankets) which are smaller in area than blankets. In addition to covering, they can also be placed on the foot of the bed for decoration.

Pillows and pillowcases
Then, let’s talk about pillows. Americans have good-looking beds. Rain thinks that more pillows are also one of the factors.

American pillow name, size and purpose:

Standard: 20″ x 26″, single pillow, one single bed, two double beds, three king beds are just right;
Standard/Queen: 20″ x 28″, Twin/Full/Queen single double bed common;
Queen: 20″ x 30″, two Queen beds are just right;
King: 20″ x 36″, two King beds are enough;
Euro: 26″ x 26″ for bed decoration and backrest, generally placed vertically between the single pillow and the head of the bed;

Body Pillow, picture from Spine Align, copyright belongs to the original author
Body: 20″ x 54″ long pillow, people who sleep on the side or on the side prefer it, and it will be more comfortable for pregnant women to hug and sleep on the side;
Bolster: Cylindrical pillows, which can be used to cushion the elbows of the lumbar cushion, and vary in size;

Neckroll: small cylindrical pillows used to support the neck, varying in size;
Lumbar: Long pillow, used for waist support, usually on the sofa for decoration;

Throw Pillow/Decorative Pillow: The shape is variable, but it is usually square, the kind of pillow used to decorate the backrest on the sofa 16″ x 16″, 18″ x 18″, 20″ x 20″, etc.
Boudoir: 12″ x 16″ small pillow, mostly used for decoration;
Floor: A pillow placed on the ground or used as a stool, also called Pouf.
Generally, most of the pillows used for normal sleep are Standard/Queen and King. The personal pillows are determined according to the size of the bed, and the rest can be used as pillows, cushion pillows or decorations.

If you want to make a double bed beautifully, a Rain thinks that the easiest thing is to add two or three Euro Pillows behind two single pillows of corresponding sizes.

There are two names for pillowcases in English: Pillowcase and Pillow Sham, as shown below↓

Pillowcase is simply a rectangular bag-shaped pillowcase with a side opening, while the pillow sham has an opening on the back, usually an envelope design, and there are decorative flanges on the four sides, and the appearance will generally be more beautiful. Generally, Standard/Queen size pillowcases are universal.

PS, Americans don’t use pillow towels.

If you are worried that the pillow will be easily stained with sweat and oil and turn yellow, you can also add a pillow protector first, a protective pillowcase that fits the pillow and has a zipper closure, and then put a normal pillowcase on the outside, so that the pillow will be more durable .

How to choose high-quality bedding
The quality of bedding is directly proportional to the quality of sleep. When choosing a high-quality bedding, the main considerations are the material of the fabric, the density of the cloth, the weaving method, and the special treatment of the fabric.

Fabric material
1. Natural fibers: Cotton (cotton), Linen (linen), Hemp (hemp), Silk (silk), etc.

Because pure cotton fabrics are not easy to allergies, have good breathability and water absorption, are soft and comfortable, and are affordable and easy to take care of, they are deeply loved by people. Its disadvantage is that it will shrink and wrinkle easily.

Egyptian Cotton (Egyptian cotton), Egyptian cotton has the longest fiber and the softest fabric, which has become the gold standard in the cotton industry. However, Egyptian cotton is actually divided into many different grades, so sometimes it is said to be 100% on the market. It is not difficult to understand that Egyptian cotton, but the price is very different. In addition to Egyptian cotton, Pima Cotton and Sea Island Cotton are both sources of high-quality long-fiber cotton (the difference between these three is only in the planting area, they are actually the same variety of cotton plants).

In addition to cotton, linen cloth is more environmentally friendly, good in water absorption, high fiber strength, durable and lint-free. It also has natural antibacterial and mildew-proof effects. The disadvantage of linen is also that it is easy to shrink. Wrinkles and harder to iron than cotton cloth.

Silk is smooth, soft and absorbs water well, but it is expensive and requires careful care.

2. Man-made fibers: Viscose Rayon (rayon), Rayon Made From Bamboo (bamboo pulp fiber), Modal (modal fiber), Tencel Lyocell (tencel), etc.

Rayon is made of cellulose extracted from wood pulp. Compared with cotton, rayon woven fabrics are softer, smoother, and more absorbent. The disadvantage is that it is not durable, especially when the fiber is not strong enough when wet.

Bamboo pulp fiber is a rayon made of cellulose extracted from bamboo pulp instead of wood pulp. It was once hyped up and said that it is natural and environmentally friendly and has bamboo anti-bacterial properties. However, in previous years, the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) pointed out that the so-called “bamboo fiber manufacturing” is actually just rayon made from bamboo pulp. The production process uses a lot of toxic solvents and is not environmentally friendly. It has nothing to do with its own characteristics, and its antibacterial efficacy is unfounded. The accusation that the label of “Made of Bamboo” and the advertisements of bamboo fiber environmental protection and antibacterial are false, has imposed heavy fines on several major retailers in the United States. However, if environmental protection factors are not taken into consideration, bamboo pulp fiber is softer than cotton and has better water absorption like rayon.

Bamboo Charcoal uses nanotechnology to fuse activated carbon particles into bamboo pulp fibers, that is, processed bamboo pulp fibers, which increase the antibacterial properties of the fabric and reduce the problem of odor.

Modal fiber is the second-generation rayon, which maintains the soft and good water absorption characteristics of the first-generation rayon, increases the wet strength of the fiber, and makes the fabric more durable.

Tencel is the third generation of rayon, which not only increases the fiber strength and makes the woven fabric more soft and durable, but also has the characteristics of good water absorption, low sensitivity, wrinkle resistance, antibacterial, and mildew resistance, and the production process is changed to non-toxic Solvents, to achieve true green environmental protection.

3. Synthetic fiber: Polyester (polyester fiber), Acrylic (acrylic fiber), Nylon (nylon), Spandex (spandex) and other artificial synthetic fibers from petroleum. Fabrics made of these fibers are usually cheaper and have good wrinkle resistance, but these fibers are usually poorly hygroscopic and prone to static electricity, which can make people very uncomfortable in humid and hot weather.

4. Blended fiber: Blended fiber combines the advantages of different raw materials, but it is also more likely to cause allergies.
